George Costanza, Dip Your Chip Freely!

    Timmy was scientifically proved wrong!
Everybody remembers the infamous Seinfeld moment, when George Castanza was scolded for “double dipping”. The act of taking a chip, dipping, biting, and putting the chip back into the dip after having bitten off of it is the act of “double dipping”.
I was shocked when I turned on the news yesterday morning, November 15th, and found that “double dipping” is not bad, for it does not spread any excess bacteria. All these years of striving not to double dip, have in fact been a waste of my energy. And Costanza, for you, you can now dip freely.

Well, this amazing discovery was aired on November 15, 2007, my moms birthday. The date will always hold the significance of her birth and double-dipping being allowed.

My Dad’s birthday was the 17th.

So happy birthday to you both, and George Costanza: Dip your chip freely!

    Lo and Behold--Bad Timing...

If you are one of those people where everything falls into place at just the right time and life is joyful and stress-free, I greatly despise you and I will commit to believing that you do not exist. Two scenarios, one unhappy J…

    Poor Birkleigh:
My doggy, Birkleigh, has had some unfortunate experiences befall him recently. In a trip to the groomer (and he has been seeing groomers for, o you know, only 3 years) the groomer in using a dull blade or having inexperience burned him where it “hurts”. It is a terrible razor burn and demands extensive treatment and care. This all, of course, occurs on Friday, the day before we leave on vacation. Oh yes, that groomer has lost our service.

    I’m Sorry, Tryouts are When?:
In band, we have All-Region tryouts, which have their own set of music and dates and such. We use this music (taking a combination of two songs and 2 scales) for a tryout that will determine which band and which chair we will be in next semester. It is a huge deal! There are 3 bands of different levels. It will determine what songs you play in Concert Contest, what chair you will be, whether or not you will march, how many concerts you perform, et cetera et cetera… Huge deal, easy score, right? Wrong.
Just last week, in marching at the stadium, my lips became very very chapped. No big deal, right? And again my friend, wrong. It became so severe that my lips are now extremely swollen and there are huge cuts all inside my mouth, making it very hard to play high notes and to control my dynamics. And oh yeah, tryouts are tomorrow…

What it's like from the Marching Band Stands

I am a 2nd year trumpet player. I have won awards for my playing and I can officially say “This one time at band camp…” because I went to a Band Camp. But before last Thursday I had never marched on a field, or played in the stands at a football game. But I did. It was amazingly fun and I loved every minute of it.

When you walk in, it’s all the same as a football stadium. But when you go behind the stadium to the truck with all the band instruments, every one is wearing your shoes, your “snazzy” jacket, and your tuxedo pants for uniform. And even though these people look familiar, they’re not. So you cross the bleachers, up some stairs, and in direct view of everyone in the stadium, you sit on cold icky bleachers. I found my bands trumpet players, who were in fact, as lost as I was. We eventually got split up and I was mixed with another band, though familiar with the people not the music. I had to learn a few songs and sight read a bit, but it turned out OK. We talked a lot in between songs and we had to learn these little chant thingies and different movements to accompany certain songs. I had lots of fun up in the stands with the people whom I had met only once or twice that shared my interests.

At halftime we went onto the field, got into position. I swear, a drum major is a scream metal lead singer in disguise. Attention. That’s what she says. We hold up our instruments. We play, we play well. Even with the wind blowing our instruments back and the cold air trying to block our air passage, we played. And it was fun. And I wondered what the people in the stands were thinking. I still do, but maybe when we walked back to the truck to put away our instruments and kids came up to people telling them how great the band was, I put two and two together.
